Previous article a little light on substance - here is a better one (written 6 months before Allen passed).

"They are looking more to why a horse will win rather than why it won't. Better perhaps to adopt the lead character, Jay Trotter, approach in the classic punting movie: Let it Ride. Jay asks his acquaintances one by one for a selection and then crosses that one out of his race book until only one horse remains. It becomes Jay's selection. At least Jay was conducting some research."
