EI, I don't think you're crazy at all. It's one of the things I look for - snaps.

Horses snapping back to distance are interesting prospects. For example, if a horse is running 1-1/8, drops back to 5f or 6f and is in today's race for 1-1/8 again this is likely a conditioning move by the trainer. Especially if it's in an 8 to 15 day timeframe.

As for class, you may see some horses steadily advancing in class, then suddenly jump back. Another conditioning move where the trainer is also banking on the odds inching up. Especially when the horse runs with the leader or does that thing where they're up near the leader, fall back 3 - 5 lengths then gain 2 - 4 but finish way back.

But, as you say, just something to consider.
