Win versus Place Markets
Question Time
Say for example we are wanting to develop a system that has an average divi of $1.70. First thing would be that you would immediately think of place betting. However, we are constantly told that place betting at the TAB's is not a good way to bet, and that teh odds on offer are in general not a true reflection of its chance of placing. On the other hand, we are told that the Win markets are a very accurate representation of a horses chances of winning. So going back to the orginal scenario, if you were targetting a $1.70 av divi, is it better to develop a method which focuses on backing one horse for a place? Or targetting 2-3 horses in the win market to return a similiar dividend? (ie. dutch betting) Would I be right to assume that targetting the 2-3 horses and dutch betting them would be the most efficient way to achive the long term $1.70 divi? |

The 1.70 is equal to 58.82% to market price.
(100 divided by 1.70= 58.82%) If one where Dutching the 2-3 horses, the book percentage would have to be 58.82% or less to equal this div . (1 divided by 58.82% =1.70) Try & target races with 10 runners & less if place betting where 3 divs are paid & 10 runners & less if Dutching. This reduces the run of outs which is something we have to be mindful of because we are dealing with odds-on prices. There is no right or wrong answer here because it comes back to the ability to target races which favour us statistically. Try & remember that half the battle is selecting the right races which favour us. Tip -the best races to target are non handicap races, 10 runners & less, this includes certain maiden races where the whole field has had a run. Reason for this is that many outsiders come from handicap races so this is not in our favour long term.. Try & target 3-5% profit on bank increase for the day then stop for the day. The reason for this is that one will find on most days that we hit the 5% mark, we then give it all back by continuing to bet, most times. We will generally be more successful long term by taking this approach because the window of opportunity, generally only stays open for a limited amount of time. Try & think in general terms, because nothing usually is exact. Cheers.

This is not such a bad idea when you look at other options, we all know that place betting can be a minefield when dealing with the TAB, the bookies don't offer the best options for place betting and Betfair can be problems getting a good sized place bet matched.
I am sure you could get better than 65% win strike at average of $1.70 |
