Arrow Jury out on new jockey helmets

The Australian Jockeys’ Association has been successful in stopping Racing Australia from forcing jockeys and track riders to wear the Derby and Aussie Track helmets by March.

Leading jockeys were unanimous in their belief the helmets needed to be tweaked to be more comfortable.

Riders felt the crown was too hard and could cause headaches if worn over long periods.

In the past riders had six brands to choose from and would wear the brand of helmet which suited them best.

“What does seem strange to us is RA is forcing Australian jockeys to wear the one brand, but riders in other parts of the globe have a choice of helmets.”

Following extensive scientific testing the Aussie Track and New Derby ARB HS 2012 certified helmets are now available. Both provide unparalleled safety improvements.
Aussie Rider Safety Pty Limited is the only supplier at this stage that has been able to meet the required standard of ARB HS 2012.

Personally, I own the New Derby for track work riding.
D. Oliver has worn the New Derby for years according to Hyland Sportswear.
Most jockeys prefer the GPA 2 or 3, and I think that's the issue, they don't comply with the new rules and standards.

The idea behind the new rule is to reduce neck injuries because of the makeup of the foam inside the helmet.

From what I'm reading, limited sizing & a lack of consultation were issues the jockeys have
The proposed helmets do carry extra padding but that also make them heavier

Apparently the foam in the "old" helmets was too dense, and while it protected the head, it resulted in neck trauma. So they are putting more foam in, with a layer of shock absorbing foam, which does make the helmet heavier, but still protects the head, but most importantly the neck. Too many jockeys were sustaining neck and spinal injuries from bad falls.
