Melbourne Cup winner Viewed dies
Sunday, 18 April 2010:

Champion stayer Viewed, winner of the 2008 Melbourne Cup, has died after suffering complications from a twisted bowel.

The six-year-old won last year's Caulfield Cup but after two sub par runs this autumn he was rested with this year's spring in mind.

Viewed gave master trainer Bart Cummings an historic 12th victory in Australia's most famous race when he held off English stayer Bauer to win in a photo finish.

He died on Saturday and was buried at owner Dato Tan Chin Nam's Think Big Stud in the NSW Southern Highlands.

"It is extremely sad," Dato Tan's bloodstock manager Duncan Ramage said.

"We were looking forward to another spring Cups campaign with him and then later for him to stand at Think Big.

"It is a large loss to racing and to the future breeding industry.

"He has been buried standing up next to the flagpole where the Melbourne Cup flag with his name on it sometimes flies."

Viewed won his first race in February 2007 as a three-year-old but went to another level the following year with his seven length triumph in the Brisbane Cup in June 2008.

A few months later he made history with his Melbourne Cup win in the closest finish ever recorded.

It would be almost a year until his next win, a stirring victory over stablemate Roman Emperor, one of four Group One wins for Cummings over the spring carnival.

A $50,000 yearling purchase by Ramage, Viewed won more than $6 million prize money.

Sad to see him go was a good horse and well looked after by bart and co, unfortunately this is part of life and this industry doesn't make it any less sad when it happens though.
